Billie: Expenses From a Receipt Photo

Mini App • Finance & Payments

About this App

Receipts pile up in pockets and bags, and by month's end it is unclear where the money went. Keeping a spreadsheet by hand gets old within a week. Billie takes a different route: you photograph a receipt, send it to the bot, and it assembles an expense report.

The app is small and does one thing, so you can grasp it on the first launch.

Receipt in, report out

The principle is simple. You send a photo of a receipt and Billie builds a report of your spending. No typing amounts and item names by hand, just a decent shot.

It all happens in a familiar Telegram chat. No separate program to install, and the bot also exists as a mini app.

How to shoot so the bot gets it right

Photo quality decides everything. The bot's own description says it outright: the image must be clear, the receipt large, with legible items, the total amount and the date.

  1. Lay the receipt on a flat surface and smooth it out.
  2. Shoot in good light, avoiding glare and the shadow of your hand.
  3. Hold the phone parallel to the receipt so the text is not distorted.
  4. Make sure all items, the total and the date are in the frame.

Faded thermal paper is best photographed right after the purchase. After a few weeks the print can turn very pale.

Two commands instead of a ten-item menu

Controls are minimal, which is a plus. /start launches the bot setup and /stats shows monthly statistics.

  • /start. Initial setup, after which you can send receipts right away.
  • /stats. A monthly spending summary to see where the budget goes.

If you need a full budget with categories, limits and goals, look at such tools separately. Billie is geared to fast logging rather than complex planning.

Why receipt-based tracking works

Bank statements show only an amount and a store. A receipt reveals the details: what exactly you bought, what each item cost, whether there were discounts.

With details it is easier to spot small leaks in the budget: the daily coffee, impulse buys, extras at the supermarket. The habit forms in a couple of weeks.

A word on privacy

A receipt can carry more than it seems: the store name, the time, part of a card number, loyalty numbers. Before sending a photo, check whether anything extra is in the frame.

  • Cover card numbers. If card data is visible, cover it with a finger.
  • Skip receipts with other people's data. For example, those showing a client's name.
  • Avoid business documents if you are unsure about data storage policy.

Who it suits

People who want to know where their money goes but will not maintain a spreadsheet. Freelancers who collect receipts for reports. Couples and roommates splitting shared costs.

If your receipts are almost always digital and arrive by email, snapping photos may be unnecessary. But paper receipts in shops and cafes are still common.

Making the habit stick

Send the receipt right away, while it is in your hand. Do not leave it for the evening: the lazy excuse piles up along with the receipts.

At month's end open the stats and find your three biggest spending lines. It is a quick way to see where you can save.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Billie work?▼
You send the bot a photo of a receipt and it builds a report of your spending. /start launches setup and /stats shows monthly statistics. No manual typing of amounts is needed.
What kind of receipt photo works best?▼
A clear, large one with legible items, the total amount and the date. Shoot in good light, keep the phone parallel to the paper and smooth the receipt out. Blurry or cropped shots are better retaken.
Is it safe to send receipts to a bot?▼
Receipts sometimes show card details, loyalty numbers and a client name. Cover anything extra before sending. Do not send documents with other people's personal data.
Does Billie replace a full budgeting app?▼
It is built for quick receipt logging and monthly statistics. If you need complex limits, goals and planning, you will need a separate tool. For a spending-tracking habit, this much is enough.
