Open in the center or a corner. Those squares sit on the most winning lines.
Check for threats first. If your opponent has two in a row, block the third square before building your own line.
Hunt for a fork. A move that creates two threats at once cannot be stopped.
Answer a corner with the center. Replying to a corner opening on an edge often hands your opponent a fork.
