About this App
People from different countries share one chat, and the conversation runs in three languages at once. Copying every message into a translator takes too long, and the discussion has already moved on. The Translator bot translates messages right in the group. 🌍
It acts like a regular chat member: it reads messages, translates them and replies. The project's source code is open to everyone, and the developer handles support personally.
Three translation modes for different chats
The same chat can need different bot behavior at different times. That is why Translator has three modes you can switch in settings.
- Auto. The bot translates every message whose language differs from the group's main language.
- Forwards. Works like auto, but only for forwarded messages.
- Manual. A translation appears only after you reply to a message with the !translate command or mention the bot.
A busy group with foreign guests suits auto. A work chat where translation is needed now and then is better served by manual mode. 🎛️
Setup in a couple of minutes
- Add the bot to your group chat.
- Open the bot in a private chat and call /settings.
- Choose a language and mode. The bot asks which chat should receive the ready configuration command.
- Send the command to the group and test it on a few messages.
Configuring through private messages keeps bulky button menus out of the group. It also lets you prepare setups for several chats at once. ⚙️
How many languages it understands
The bot description claims support for 134 languages. That is a long list, covering both popular and less common ones.
Quality depends on the pair. Translation between widespread languages is usually clear, while rare pairs and slang produce more errors. The meaning comes through, subtle shades get lost. 📝
Commands and support
- /settings changes language and mode (in a private chat with the bot only).
- /contact reaches the developer.
- /donate lets you support the project.
Donations are voluntary, and nothing needs to be paid for to make the bot work. If you find a bug, write through /contact. ☕
What an admin should consider
Automatic translation reads the group's messages. If your chat covers personal or business topics, discuss the connection with members first.
- Warn the chat. People have the right to know a bot processes their messages.
- Do not translate confidential content. Contracts, passwords and bank details are better kept out of such chats.
- Double-check important messages. Legal and medical topics need a human translator.
- Connect the original. Copies with a similar name may behave differently.
Who gets the most from Translator
Moderators of multilingual communities, organizers of international meetups, members of work chats with foreign colleagues and anyone learning a language who wants a translation next to the original. 🗣️
For one-to-one private messages, Telegram's built-in translation is enough. The bot earns its place where many people talk at once.
