How a phone recognizes music

Recognition services build a fingerprint from the recording: a map of the strongest sound peaks by pitch and time. That fingerprint is compared against a huge catalog, and a match gives you the title and artist.

This is why clarity beats volume. A quiet, clean recording usually works better than a loud one buried under chatter and clinking glasses.

Get a match on the first try

1. Move closer to the speaker if you can.
2. Record the chorus rather than the intro. It's the most distinctive part.
3. Aim for 10 to 15 seconds. Shorter clips carry too little data.
4. Send it and wait a moment for the answer.

No luck on the first go? Try another part of the song. The second attempt often does it.

When the bot comes up empty

A miss usually has a simple cause:

• Live versions and covers have a different fingerprint from the studio track.
• DJ remixes are often missing from catalogs.
• Heavy noise like street sounds, wind or people talking over the music.
• Brand new or obscure songs that haven't been added yet.

Try a different part of the song, or type in any words you caught. Text search can find what audio couldn't.
