TelegramBot Login Widget Demo

You see a "Log in with Telegram" button on a site and wonder: what exactly does it hand over, and who checks it? The TelegramBot bot shows how such a login works. It is a demo bot for the Telegram Login Widget. 🔑

By itself it is not an assistant or an account manager, as some reviews claim. Its job is to be an example for developers.

What the Login Widget is

It is the official way to let a site sign you in with a Telegram account without inventing a password. The user presses the button, confirms the login in the app, and the site receives a short set of facts about them.

According to Telegram's documentation, that set includes an ID, first name, last name, username, and a photo link, where they exist. The phone number is not passed to the site.

How a site knows it is you

• Signature. Data arrives with a hash that can be checked against the bot's secret key.
• Time. The response carries a timestamp, and stale logins are rejected.
• Bot binding. The widget works only with a registered bot and the site's domain.

That makes a forged login hard, provided the developer verifies the signature on their side. If they do not, the protection means nothing.

What the demo bot does in your chat

For an ordinary user the bot is of little use: it has no commands, and there is nothing to talk about. It exists for a test page where developers see how the button looks and what comes back. 🧪

If you only want to try it, open the widget page in Telegram's documentation and press the button. No outside data is needed.

If you build your own login

1. Create a bot through Telegram's official bot service.
2. Set the site's domain in the bot's settings.
3. Paste the widget code into the page.
4. Verify the signature on the server every time.
5. Never trust data that arrives unchecked.

Avoiding fakes

Scammers build sites with a similar login button that asks for an SMS code or a two-step password. A real Telegram login is confirmed inside the app, not by typing a code on an outside site. ⚠️

If a page asks for a number, a code, and a password at once, close it. Check the site address before you press anything.

What to do after logging in somewhere

Open Telegram settings and review the list of active sessions and connected websites. Unneeded access can be revoked. A habit of cleaning that list every few months lowers the risk. 🧹

While there, turn on two-step protection if it is not on yet, and remember its password. Without it, recovering an account after losing a phone is much harder, and easier for attackers.
