Telegram Bot Raw: IDs and JSON

You need a chat ID, and Telegram's interface shows it nowhere. Without that number you cannot set up a bot or debug a script.

What the JSON reply contains

It is the same structure every bot receives through the Bot API: the message object, plus details about the sender and the chat. To an ordinary person it looks like a wall of curly braces. To a developer it is the most honest view of what a bot sees.

The profile names the author and has no other commands or descriptions. Usage is simple: press Start and you get a reply.

Three moments when it saves time

• Your own ID. Press Start and find the id field in the sender block. That is your numeric user identifier.
• A group or channel ID. Add the bot to a group and it shows the identifier. For groups it is usually negative.
• Files and forwards. Send a document or forward a message and the reply includes the file_id and details about where the forward came from.

Once you have the number, remove the bot from the group. You no longer need it there. 🧹

Finding the right field fast

1. Open the chat with the bot and press Start.
2. Find the chat block. The chat identifier sits next to the id key.
3. For a group, add the bot first, then write any message.
4. Copy the number in full, including the minus sign if there is one.

People often lose the minus when copying, then spend half an hour wondering why the setup fails.

Who gets value from a JSON answer

Bot developers who write handlers and want to see which fields arrive in an update. Admins who must paste a channel ID into settings. Anyone who needs a file_id to resend a file without uploading it again.

If programming is far from your world, one skill is enough: find the word id and read the number beside it. 🙂

Keep this in mind

The bot sees everything you send it and everything happening in a group where it was added. Do not forward private conversations, documents with personal data or payment details. An empty message is enough to get an ID.

The name resembles several other bots with "raw" and "data" in them, so check the full username. Look-alikes exist, and you are about to trust someone's bot with access to a chat.

The audience is large: Telegram shows about 21 thousand people using the bot every month. It is a familiar tool for anyone who works with bots.

An alternative without a bot

You can learn an ID other ways too: some clients show it in chat settings, and developers get it in code through Bot API methods. When you need it fast and without code, a chat with the bot is the shortest path.
