Welcome Bot: Greet Every Newcomer

Bot • Moderation & Anti-Spam

About this App

A new person joins your chat and nobody says a word. While they wonder where they landed and what is allowed, a minute passes and they leave. Welcome Bot fixes this simply: it greets everyone who joins a group it belongs to.

The bot's description is short: it welcomes everyone entering a group chat. Everything else is set up with commands. 👋

What it can do

The core is simple: you write a text and the bot sends it to newcomers. There are some nice extras too.

  • Welcome. A message for those who join the group.
  • Goodbye. A separate text for those who leave, which you can switch off.
  • Settings protection. You can limit editing so only the person who invited the bot changes the texts.

Command list

  • /help shows help.
  • /welcome sets the welcome text.
  • /goodbye sets the goodbye text.
  • /disable_goodbye turns the goodbye off.
  • /lock leaves the right to change messages only to the person who invited the bot.
  • The reverse of lock lets everyone change messages.
  • /quiet turns off the "Sorry, only the person who..." replies.
  • /unquiet turns those replies back on.

Setup in five minutes

  1. Add the bot to your group.
  2. Type /welcome followed by your greeting text.
  3. If you want a goodbye, set it with /goodbye.
  4. Turn on /lock so a random member cannot rewrite your text.
  5. Test it by joining the group with a second account.

If members poke the bot and get a refusal, the /quiet command removes that annoying reply. ✅

Writing a greeting people read

A bad greeting is long and nobody reads it. A good one fits in three or four lines and answers a newcomer's questions.

  • Who we are. One sentence on the chat's topic.
  • The key rule. The one whose breach ends in a ban.
  • Where to start. Where to post a first question.

Skip piles of emoji and capital letters. A warm tone works better than shouting. 🙂

What it does not replace

It only greets. There is no spam protection, captcha or filters here, so a big public group still needs a moderator.

The greeting appears for everyone who joins, spam bots included. In very busy chats this adds messages to the feed, so keep the text short.

Who it is for

Small and mid-sized communities, study groups, clubs and project chats where a newcomer should grasp the rules at once. If you need full protection and automatic moderation, pick a separate tool for that.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set the welcome text?▼
Add the bot to your group and send /welcome with your greeting. Use /goodbye for the farewell. Check the result by joining the group with a second account.
How do I stop members from changing messages?▼
Turn on /lock, and only the person who invited the bot will be able to change the texts. A reverse command allows everyone again. To remove the refusal replies, use /quiet.
Can I turn off the goodbye message?▼
Yes, there is a /disable_goodbye command for that. The welcome keeps working. You can set a goodbye again later with /goodbye.
Will the bot protect my group from spam?▼
No, it only greets members. Spam and bot protection needs a moderator or a separate moderation tool. Keep the greeting short so it does not clutter the feed.
