OrgRobot: A Quiz Gate for Your Group

Bot • Moderation & Anti-Spam

About this App

An open group chat attracts the wrong crowd fast: promoters, engagement farmers and bots show up, and real members end up scrolling past the junk. 🧹 OrgRobot puts a small checkpoint at the door. A newcomer has to answer a few questions before getting the right to write.

The bot works inside the group itself. Members install nothing, and the whole check happens in the chat at the moment of joining.

The first minute of a new member

When someone joins, the bot switches them to read-only mode. They can see the conversation but cannot post yet.

OrgRobot then sends its questions. With valid answers, the member gets write permission and carries on as normal. Without them, the account stays silent, and the chat owner decides what to do about it.

Spam bots that blast ads right after joining usually stop at this step. A real person needs about half a minute to answer.

You write the questions

The main benefit is that the admin sets both the questions and the valid answers. Every chat can have its own set.

A few ideas for what to ask:

  • Group rules. Ask what is banned in the chat. Newcomers read the rules at least once.
  • Community topic. In a gardening chat, a question about seedlings filters out random visitors.
  • A basic human check. A short question with an obvious answer that a mass-posting script is not built for.

The closer a question is to your community's subject, the better it works. Hard questions scare off real people too, so keep the bar reasonable.

Setup in five steps

  1. Add OrgRobot to your chat and make it an admin.
  2. Grant two permissions: delete messages and ban users. Nothing else is required.
  3. The bot starts at once and uses its default questions.
  4. Type /orgrobot check in the chat and confirm the bot replies correctly.
  5. Sign in on the service website with the Telegram login widget, open "My Chats" and configure your group.

If your chat or the settings button is missing from the list, run /orgrobot reload_admins in the chat. You may need to repeat it a few times until the bot confirms that it has reloaded the admin list. 🔄

What you can adjust per chat

Each chat has its own settings: the language of the bot's messages, how long the welcome message stays on screen, and the questions with their answers.

That helps when you run several groups for different audiences. A Russian-speaking chat gets Russian questions, and an international one can use English.

Where this kind of gate falls short

Any entry check rests on one assumption: a spam bot cannot answer. That holds for simple scripts, but not for every one. If your question has been the same for years and the answer is easy to find in old messages, an attacker can learn it.

Rewrite the wording every couple of months, and ideally keep several variants. 🔐

One more thing: the bot does not replace moderation. It shuts the door on mass posting, but a human troublemaker who answers honestly still gets in. Clear rules and active moderators remain necessary.

Which chats benefit most

  • Large open communities with a steady flow of newcomers.
  • Topic groups where members should know the subject.
  • Chats with a spam history, where admins are tired of deleting ads by hand.

A private chat of ten friends does not need it. Entry there is already controlled by the invite link.

Practical tips for admins

Test everything before launch. Join the chat from a spare account and go through the questions as a newcomer. You will see whether the wording is clear and whether the check takes too long.

Pin a message explaining that entry goes through questions. Newcomers get less confused, and you answer fewer private messages asking why they cannot write. 📌

Frequently Asked Questions

What permissions does OrgRobot need in my chat?▼
Make it an admin with two rights: delete messages and ban users. Nothing else is required. Extra permissions add no benefit.
What can a new member do before answering the questions?▼
They stay in read-only mode: they can see the conversation but cannot post. Once the answers are valid, the bot restores write permission and the restriction is lifted.
How do I change the questions and the bot language?▼
Sign in on the service website with the Telegram login widget and open My Chats. There you set the message language, the welcome message display time, the questions and the answers. If your chat is missing, run /orgrobot reload_admins in it.
Will the bot stop all spam?▼
No, it filters out mass posting by simple bots. A human troublemaker, or a bot that learned your answers, can still pass. Rotate the questions over time and keep regular moderation in place.
