About this App
The semester has started and the study group you need is buried somewhere in dozens of forwarded links. UnisaGroupsBot fixes exactly that: you type a module code and the bot lists matching Telegram groups. 📚
It was built for students of the University of South Africa and describes itself as an assistant for university groups. It is not officially tied to the institution. It is a student-run effort.
A code in, a group out
The main command is /search. Follow it with a module code or a degree code from your study plan, and the bot replies with the groups it found.
Pick a group, tap the join button and you are in. The whole thing takes under a minute, and you never have to beg a classmate for an invite link.
The command list
- /help sends a short guide to using the bot.
- /search looks up groups by module or degree code.
- /verify explains how to verify your account.
- /admin calls the admins when you need a hand.
- /feedback passes your comments to the bot owner.
Why verification matters
Study groups attract a lot of people, and some of them are advertisers, scammers or sellers of ready-made essays. Account checks give admins a way to keep the noise down.
Send /verify to see the steps. If something goes wrong, use /admin and describe the problem in a sentence or two.
Why students pick Telegram for coursework
A Telegram group can hold up to 200,000 members, while a regular WhatsApp group tops out at 1,024. For big distance-learning cohorts that gap is real.
Files, notes and voice messages also stay in one feed, and searching the history is quick. In a busy group, switch notifications to mentions only so you do not drown in messages.
Staying safe in open groups
Nobody officially moderates student groups, so use your own judgment. A few habits protect your money and your data:
- Never post passwords, SMS codes or card details.
- Do not pay strangers for leaked exams or finished assignments. It is a common scam.
- Check official university announcements on the university's own channels.
- If a group is full of spam, tell the admins and leave.
When your module has no group
Sometimes the search comes back empty because the module is new or nobody has created a chat yet. Try the code in another format, for example without spaces and in capitals.
If that still fails, use /admin or /feedback. A group may get added at your request. 🙂
Keeping the noise down
Large cohort chats can collect hundreds of messages a day. Pin the posts you need, mute the group and open it at a time that suits you instead of reacting to every ping.
When you ask a question, include the module code and the assignment number. People answer faster that way. Before posting, scroll through the pinned messages and search a keyword, because the answer is often already there.
Help others when you know the answer. A group stays useful as long as people share notes and tips, not only ask for them. 🎓
