Splitopia: Split the Bill Without Arguing

Mini App • Finance & Payments

About this App

Five friends, one bill and a phone calculator. Someone ordered a salad, someone three cocktails, and the waiter brought a total with a tip. Splitting evenly is unfair and doing the math by hand takes forever. Splitopia handles exactly that scene.

It is a Telegram mini app that reads the receipt and lets each person mark what they ordered.

One photo instead of a spreadsheet

Here is how it goes. One person photographs the receipt. The app pulls out the items, tax, tips and service charge and generates a link you can send to the group chat.

Everyone else opens the link, sees the list and claims their dishes. Only one person in the group needs to scan the receipt.

Four steps to the totals

  1. Photograph the whole receipt in good light.
  2. Check the recognized items and correct anything that was misread.
  3. Send the link to your group chat.
  4. Let each person claim their items and see their own amount.

Shared dishes, such as a pizza for three, can be split among the people who ate it.

Tax and tips stop breaking the math

The most common source of arguments is what to do with the tip and service fee. Splitopia distributes them proportionally to what each person ordered. Whoever took the pricey dish pays more, whoever ate lightly pays less.

Nobody overpays for someone else's dinner, and you do not have to compute percentages yourself.

Beyond the restaurant

  • Trips. Taxis, tickets, weekend groceries.
  • Shared apartments. Rent and household purchases.
  • Parties. Buying food and drinks for the whole crowd.
  • Grocery runs shared by several families.

The app handles the major currencies, so it works while traveling too.

No money moves through the app

One key detail: under its terms of service, Splitopia does not accept payments or transfer money. It only does the arithmetic. You settle up the usual way: a transfer, cash or your bank.

That is rather a plus. You need not link a card or wallet, which means fewer risks.

What to do with shared dishes

Appetizers, a pizza and a bottle for the table usually raise the most questions. Split such an item among the people who touched it, and the rest will not pay for something they skipped.

If someone is late and has not claimed their dishes yet, the other totals may shift later. So wait until everyone has chosen, and only then send money. That way the settlement closes in one go.

The project's website says the app is free, with no subscriptions or hidden fees. All you need is a Telegram account, and everything opens inside the messenger via a link.

Tips to make the bill add up

  • Shoot it straight. A level picture without glare reads better.
  • Check the total. The amount in the app should match the receipt.
  • Decide in advance who pays the waiter and who gets repaid afterward.
  • Do not drag it out. Ask friends to claim dishes at once, while everyone remembers the order.

When settling takes long, friends forget who had what. Better to close the matter the same evening.
