About this App
You are setting up your own bot, connecting notifications or asking an admin to add you to a list, and suddenly you need your account's numeric ID. Telegram's interface does not show it. IDBot returns the number in seconds: send a command, get the digits. 🔢
Why an ID matters at all
Every user, group and channel in Telegram has a numeric identifier. Names and usernames can change, but the number stays.
It is requested when configuring bots, automations and alerts. For example, to make a bot reply only to you, developers put your ID in the code and check each message against it.
Typical cases: a home project on a microcontroller that sends you messages, a price monitoring script or your own helper bot. All of them need a recipient address, which is your numeric ID.
Admins need it to configure moderation bots and for support requests that must point to an exact account.
Three ways to get a number
- /getid. The bot answers with your user ID.
- /getgroupid. The bot names the ID of the group it was added to.
- A forwarded message. Forward someone's message to the bot and it identifies the sender's ID, provided their privacy settings allow it.
Step by step: finding your own ID
- Open the chat with the bot. Press /start.
- Send /getid. The answer arrives at once.
- Copy the number. Paste it wherever an identifier was requested.
Group and channel IDs
Add the bot to a group and send /getgroupid. It names the number of that exact chat.
Group and channel numbers look different from user ones: in the Bot API, supergroups and channels have a -100 prefix before the number. For example, 123456789 becomes -100123456789. That is normal, so copy the whole number including the minus.
When forwarding will not work
If a person hides forwarding in their privacy settings, the bot cannot see their ID. This protects the user and cannot be bypassed, nor should it be.
Forwarding does not work for every message anyway. If the bot stays silent, the forwarded message carries no author data.
Safety: what is fine and what is not
- An ID is not a password. Knowing it does not let anyone hack an account. Still, avoid posting it next to personal data.
- Never grant account access. The bot needs no login codes or passwords.
- Add it to a group deliberately. You need the bot for a minute, then you can remove it.
- Check the source. Fakes with similar names ask you to "confirm your account". A genuine ID bot never does that.
Who finds it handy
Bot owners, channel admins, people who write scripts and connect alerts, and the simply curious. Learn the number once, save it in your notes and forget about it for years. 🙂
