About this App
Your TON coins are sitting idle in a wallet. Can you put them to work without locking them away for months? Hipo offers liquid staking: you deposit TON and get back an hTON token that keeps a life of its own. 🌐
It is a Telegram Mini App for an open liquid staking protocol on the TON blockchain. Here is how it works and what can go wrong.
What liquid staking means
Ordinary staking ties coins up: you hand them to a validator and can only get them back after a waiting period. Liquid staking solves this differently: you receive a receipt token right away.
With Hipo that token is hTON. It proves your TON is staked, and you can transfer it, trade it and use it in other DeFi applications.
How your balance grows
The number of hTON in your wallet stays the same. What grows is the hTON to TON exchange rate: after each validation round, rewards are added to the token's price.
A simple example: if 1 hTON costs 1.2 TON and the yearly rate is 10%, then after a year 1 hTON is worth about 1.32 TON. The numbers are illustrative, so check real rates in the app.
A coin's journey, step by step
- You deposit TON through the Mini App.
- Hipo's smart contract delegates your stake to validators who take part in block validation rounds.
- You receive hTON at the current rate. Tokens sometimes arrive with a delay, because the round in progress must finish first.
- When you want out, you swap hTON back to TON with accumulated rewards. Getting your coins back can take time.
What the protocol is made of
The project's repository lists four parts: an on-chain smart contract, a web app for depositing and withdrawing, a Driver program that handles routine off-chain operations, and a program for validators who need to borrow funds from the protocol.
The code is open, so anyone can read it. That is no guarantee of safety, but it is a step toward transparency.
Risks you should not ignore
- No fixed yield. The documentation itself says rates are not guaranteed and the investment is not risk-free.
- Smart contract. A bug or vulnerability in the code can lead to lost funds.
- Withdrawal delay. Instant return of native TON is not always possible.
- Market price. Rewards accrue in TON, and the coin's own price can drop sharply.
- Phishing. Connect your wallet only to an app you opened from a trusted source.
A sensible approach
Start with a small amount and go through the whole cycle: deposit, wait, withdraw. That teaches you timing and fees in practice. Read the transaction confirmation in your wallet, not only the buttons in the app.
If you come across accusations aimed at any DeFi project, do not wave them off. Check them against several independent sources. Stake only money you can afford to lose. 🙂
