GratisGut: give and find free items

A stroller sits in the closet, a working but unneeded fridge stands on the balcony, and throwing them out feels wrong. Meanwhile someone else could use exactly that right now. GratisGut connects those people: one gives, another finds. 📦

It all happens inside Telegram. Listings gather in the project's channel, and you manage them through the bot.

What you can do in the bot

The bot's description names four actions, and together they cover an item's whole trip from old owner to new:

• Post listings. Want to give something away? Create a post in the bot.
• Search. Looking for a specific thing? See what has already been offered.
• Reserve. Found a match? Claim it.
• Join a waiting list. If an item is already reserved, you can queue up in case the handover falls through.

Why there is no chat noise

The classic problem with free giveaways in messengers: ten people write "can I have it", one gets a reply, and then that person vanishes. Here the bot handles reservations and queues.

The author stresses that everything runs through the channel and takes a couple of clicks. The feed stays clean, and your private messages do not turn into a forty-reply thread.

What to give away

Almost anything still in working order fits: children's clothes and toys, books, furniture, dishes, appliances, plants, leftover renovation materials. The clearer your description, the sooner you find someone who needs it.

Medicines, dangerous items and anything the law forbids passing on do not belong in a giveaway.

The bot's commands

There are only a few. /info tells you about the bot and the channel. /buttons brings the buttons back if the menu disappears. /support reaches the project team when something breaks or you need help.

Giving things away well

1. Photograph the item in good light and show any flaws.
2. Describe its size, condition and where it has to be picked up.
3. Say which hours work for the handover.
4. Once the item is gone, close the listing so you stop getting new requests.

An honest description saves nerves on both sides. Someone who knows about the chip on the tabletop will not be disappointed at the meeting.

If you are the one picking up

Do not reserve everything in sight and do not vanish after reserving. If you change your mind, release the item so the queue can move. Arrive on time and warn the giver if you are running late.

Staying safe at handover

Giving things away means meeting strangers, so the usual rules apply. Meet during the day in a busy place or at the building entrance, do not invite strangers inside without need, and share as little personal data as possible.

A free item should cost nothing. A request for a prepayment "for delivery" or a card transfer is a reason to walk away. 🙂
