About this App
You are building a Telegram bot, wiring up notifications, or filling in a config file, and it asks for a chat_id. Telegram never shows that number in the interface, so where do you find it? Chat ID Bot answers in one tap.
It does exactly one thing: it shows you the numeric ID of a chat. Press start, copy the number, move on. 😎
Why a numeric ID matters
Every user, group and channel in Telegram has an internal number. Usernames can change and so can group titles, but the number stays fixed. That is why programs address chats by it.
You need this number when you set up automatic messages, connect a bot to a work group, or send alerts from a script.
The command list
The bot keeps things short, and that is the appeal:
- /start shows your current ID.
- /usage tells you how many times the bot has been used.
- /about prints a short note about the bot itself.
According to its author, the bot can fetch the ID of any chat. It runs on Pytdbot, a Python wrapper around Telegram's client library.
Getting your ID in thirty seconds
- Open the bot and tap Start.
- Copy the number from the reply.
- Paste it into the settings of your script, bot or integration.
For your personal ID that is all it takes. For a group or channel the route depends on the situation, so follow the hints in the bot's replies.
Reading the number you get back
The shape of the number tells you what you are looking at. A positive number usually belongs to a person or a bot. A negative number points to a group. Supergroup and channel IDs generally begin with -100.
Drop the minus sign and sending will fail. It is the classic beginner mistake: someone copies only the digits and then wonders why Telegram answers with "chat not found".
When the number gets rejected
Sometimes your code refuses the ID. Three causes cover most cases:
- Your bot is not in the chat. A bot has to be added to a group before it can post there.
- Missing rights. In a channel, the bot needs to be an administrator with permission to publish.
- A lost minus. Groups and channels need the sign and the -100 prefix.
If none of that fixes it, find the ID another way. Open the chat in Telegram's web version and read the number in the address bar, or call getUpdates on your own bot after posting a message in the group.
A word on privacy
A chat ID is not a password, yet there is no reason to post it publicly. It does not let anyone read your messages, but combined with your bot's token it lets someone send messages into that chat. Keep the token separate and never share it.
The bot keeps a usage counter, which you can see with /usage. Send it nothing extra: tapping Start is all you need to get an ID.
Who will use it
Bot developers, channel admins who schedule posts, and anyone linking Telegram to monitoring tools, forms or spreadsheets. Plain curiosity counts too, since seeing your own number is mildly fun. 🙂
