Screenshots Bot: Frames From Video

bot • Handy Tools

About this App

You found a long video behind a direct link and want to know what is in it without downloading several gigabytes. Screenshots Bot takes that link and sends frames from the video straight into your chat. 📸

It is a narrow tool. It does one job and stays out of the way, which is usually what you want from a utility.

Paste a link, get frames back

You send a direct link to a video, the bot offers a few options, and you pick the one you like. Then it prepares the screenshots. According to its own description it can also produce a short sample clip from the video behind the link.

One caveat comes from the bot itself: getting screenshots from files uploaded to the chat is not supported yet. Only the link mode works.

What counts as a direct link

It is an address that points straight at a video file (think mp4 or mkv), not at a web page with a player. Open such a link in a browser and the video starts playing or downloading right away.

  • Works: a link to a file on a server or file host that serves the video without a login.
  • Does not work: a page with an embedded player, a protected stream, or an address with a temporary token that has already expired.
  • Doubtful: a link from a cloud drive. It often opens a page rather than the file, and the bot cannot read a page.

If the bot stays silent or throws an error, test the link in a browser first. Nine times out of ten the link is the culprit.

Three commands cover everything

  • /start launches the bot and doubles as a check that it is alive.
  • /settings opens the configuration, where you choose how the bot behaves when it processes your links.
  • /set_watermark sets your own watermark text for screenshots. Type the command, a space, then the text you want.

A watermark helps when you post frames in a channel or send them to a client. It discourages careless copying but will not stop a determined person, since a corner is easy to crop.

Why pull frames out of a video at all

There are more reasons than you might expect:

  1. You want to judge the quality before downloading: sharpness, colors, black bars.
  2. You are choosing a cover image for a post and need several frames from different parts of the clip.
  3. You need to show a colleague one moment from a recording without forwarding the whole file.
  4. You want to confirm that a camera or lecture recording opens at all and contains what you expect.

Frames in a chat are easy to forward. A file of several gigabytes is not.

How safe is it

Every link you send goes to the bot's side: the service opens it and reads the video. So do not send links to private recordings, internal company material or files with personal data. If an address carries an access key or a password, assume the bot owner can see it.

Also, the bot has no idea what you are looking at. Legality and rights to the video stay your responsibility. Screenshots of someone else's content are fine for personal use, but a watermark on top does not make the material yours.

When the bot acts up

This is a small project and it may not behave the same every day. Long videos take time to process, so the reply can arrive late. Give it a minute or two before you send the link again.

If it keeps failing, try another source for the same recording or adjust the options in the settings. For a one-off task it is sometimes quicker to open the video in a desktop player and grab the frame there, because you pick the exact moment yourself.

Where it earns its place

Taking a screenshot of a video on a phone is clumsy. You chase the right moment with a thumb, and the player interface covers part of the picture. The bot returns clean frames without player controls, which saves time.

It suits people who handle video links often: channel moderators, editors, anyone who reviews webinar recordings. For everyone else it is a lightweight backup tool for the occasional job, and it needs no separate app. 🎞

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I send the bot a video file instead of a link?▼
No. The bot itself warns that screenshots from files uploaded to the chat are not supported yet. Only a direct link to a video works. If the file sits on your phone, put it on a host that gives you a direct link first.
What should I do if the bot does not respond to my link?▼
Open the link in a browser. It should start the video or a download immediately. If it shows a player page or asks you to log in, the bot cannot process it. Also check that the address has not expired, and wait a couple of minutes if the video is long.
How do I add my own watermark to screenshots?▼
Send /set_watermark followed by a space and your text, for example a channel name. The bot then applies it to the frames. You can change the text with the same command, and general behavior lives in /settings.
Is it safe to send video links to the bot?▼
The bot opens the link on its own side, so the service owner can technically see it. Do not send private recordings, links with a password or access key, or anything you would not show a stranger. For public videos the risk is minimal.
