Two ways to check a person

The first way is the fastest. Forward any message from the user to the bot, and it shows what it has in the name history.

The second way is for groups. The bot has to be in the chat, and then you reply to the person's message with one of the commands.

A permanent link and search by ID

Every Telegram account has a numeric identifier, and it does not change even when the person renames themselves. The other commands of the bot rely on it.

• /get_link gives a permanent link to the account. It keeps working after the name or username changes.
• /search_id finds a user by numeric ID.

If you saved the ID of a suspicious contact, you can come back to that account later without worrying about a new display name.

When it comes in handy

People mostly check name history to tell an honest person from an impostor. Scammers like to copy other people's names and avatars, and sometimes they simply rename an account before a new scheme.

• Buying or swapping. Before a deal, see if the seller changed the name many times in a short period.
• Chat admins. History helps spot a rule breaker who came back under a new name.
• Old acquaintances. Sometimes a person just renamed themselves and you find them again.

A name change alone means nothing bad. People rename because of a surname, a nickname or new interests. It is a reason to look closer, not proof of fraud.

What the bot cannot do

Telegram has no open way to get the past names of any account. The bot can show only the changes it saw itself. If a person renamed before the bot noticed them, that record will not exist.

So an empty result does not mean the name never changed. It only means the bot recorded nothing.

The bot does not reveal phone numbers, addresses or conversations. It works with what is already visible in a public profile.

A word on privacy

A tool that remembers other people's names raises questions of ethics. Use it to protect yourself from fraud and to keep your own chats in order, not to watch acquaintances.
