Photo Translator: translate by photo

bot • Translators

About this App

You are standing in front of a menu in a language you cannot read, and all you have is a phone. Photo Translator takes a picture, finds the text on it and translates it. No typing needed. 📷

The bot works inside Telegram, so there is no separate app to install. Send a photo and wait for the result.

What the bot does

It recognizes text in images and translates it into other languages. It supports 12 languages at the moment and has a text-to-speech function, so you can listen to a translation as well as read it.

There are two commands. /start launches or restarts the bot, and /profile opens your profile. 🗂

  • Text recognition: the bot pulls words out of a picture.
  • Translation: the result arrives in the language you pick.
  • Voice playback: the translation can be read out loud.

Getting a clean translation

Output quality depends on the photo almost as much as on the bot. Optical character recognition (OCR) reads letters pixel by pixel, so a blurry shot gives you mush.

  1. Shoot in good light and avoid glare.
  2. Hold the phone straight so lines are not tilted.
  3. Move closer so the text fills most of the frame.
  4. Crop out extras: less background, fewer mistakes.
  5. Split long documents into parts, one page section at a time.

Where it helps

On a trip: menus, road signs, timetables, rental instructions. At home: a label on a package from an overseas shop, an appliance manual, a letter from a foreign office.

Studying works too. You can quickly grasp a paragraph from a textbook or a screenshot of an article. The voice option helps when you want to hear how a phrase sounds. 🎧

Example: from snapshot to readable text

Say you photographed the manual of a household appliance. You send the picture, the bot finds the lines and returns a translation in your language.

Then you can compare confusing spots with the original. If the text has numbers, temperatures or dosages, re-check them by eye: one wrong digit changes the meaning. ✅

If the shot has several columns or a table, the line order may get mixed up. In that case send each column as its own frame.

Picking a language and using voice

Before sending, check which language the bot translates into. For trips it helps to choose a language you read easily and keep it fixed.

Voice playback helps when reading is awkward: a passenger in a car, someone on the move, or a person with weak eyesight. Synthesized speech can sound mechanical, but it is enough to understand a phrase.

Limits worth knowing

Machine translation carries the meaning, but not always the shades. Dish names, slang and set phrases often come out literally and look odd.

For important papers such as contracts, certificates and medical instructions, have a specialist check the translation. The bot is good for quick understanding and does not replace a certified translator.

Think about privacy as well: a photo may contain passport data, card numbers or home addresses. Cover or crop those parts before sending. 🔒

Handwriting and fancy fonts

Printed fonts are recognized noticeably better than handwriting. Decorative lettering with swirls and patterns can also be misread.

If the bot gets one letter wrong, the translation of that word can drift. Take a second shot from another angle and compare the results.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many languages does Photo Translator support?▼
The bot supports 12 translation languages. The easiest way to see the list is to open the bot and send /start, which shows the available options.
Do I need to install a separate app?▼
No, the bot works inside Telegram. Start it with /start, send a photo with text, and the translation arrives in the chat.
Why does the bot read my picture badly?▼
Usually the cause is blur, glare, tilted lines or tiny print. Retake the shot in good light, move closer and crop the background. Handwriting is read worse than print.
Can I trust it for important documents?▼
For a quick grasp of the meaning, yes. For contracts and certificates, no. Machine translation can distort terms and details, so show legal and medical texts to a translator. Cover personal data on the photo.
