About this App
You are setting up a bot, connecting notifications or asking support to check an account, and someone asks you to send your ID. Where do you get it? Get My ID answers in one tap: launch it, get the number.
The bot does little, but it does it fast and with no sign-up. Here is how to use it and why this number is needed at all.
What an ID is and why it is not a login
Every Telegram account has a numeric identifier. It does not change even if you rename yourself or change your username. For programs it is more reliable than a nickname: a name can change at any time, and the number stays.
That is why an ID is requested when you set up notifications, grant access in an admin panel or connect a bot to your account.
Three steps to the number
- Find the bot by its exact name and check that it matches.
- Press Start or send /start.
- Read the reply: the first line holds your ID, the second the ID of the current chat.
In a private conversation these numbers match. The bot asks for nothing in return. 🔢
How to learn another chat or sender ID
If you need an ID that is not yours, forward any message to the bot. It will show the identifier of the sender or of the chat the message came from. This is handy for admins of groups and channels.
If the sender hid their ID in forwarding settings, try the Select user feature: according to the bot description, it helps in that case.
Where an ID comes in handy
- Setting up your own bot: allow commands only for the owner.
- Notifications: sending messages to the right account or chat.
- Home automation: alerts from sensors and servers.
- Support: a service checks the account by number, not by nickname.
If you are just learning to write bots, you will need an ID almost at once. 🤖
A real-life example: you wrote a simple reminder bot that must answer only you. In the code it is enough to compare the sender ID with your number. Without this check the bot will answer anyone who finds it.
An ID also helps when you need to post to a group: groups have one too, and it is usually a negative number.
IDs and security
A numeric ID alone gives no access to your account. You cannot log in to Telegram or read messages with it. Still, pass it only to people you trust and who really need it.
Do not confuse an ID with confirmation codes and a two-step verification password. Never send a code from a message to anyone, even to the bot itself.
What if the bot does not respond
Check that you launched the right bot: clones with similar names exist. Restart the dialogue with /start and wait a few seconds. If that fails, open /help or find another way to get an ID, for example in client settings, where some Telegram versions have such a feature.
It is a narrow tool, but it saves time for anyone who has ever set up a bot or automation. ⚡
