Where the story comes from

The original scene was invented by the writer Frank Stockton in a short story about a king who leaves the fate of an accused man to two doors. A reward waits behind one, death behind the other.

The mathematician and logician Raymond Smullyan turned the scene into a puzzle collection called The Lady or the Tiger? in 1982. In it the doors carry statements that may be true or false, and the king arranges the trial so that intelligence, not luck, decides.

What a puzzle looks like

Each room hides a lady or a tiger. You read the signs on the doors, take into account the rule the king announces and draw a conclusion.

The rules are usually these: the sign on one door is true and on the other false, or both are true, or both false. Your task is to go through the possibilities and find the single one where everything agrees.

1. Write down the conditions. What each door says and what is known about the truth of the signs.
2. Assume a sign is true. See where that leads.
3. Assume it is false. Test the opposite case.
4. Find the contradiction. A variant that breaks the conditions drops out.
5. Open the remaining door. Only when the conclusion is unique.

Why it is good for the mind

Such puzzles train strict thinking: holding several assumptions, testing them and resisting the first impression.

• Deduction. The answer follows from the conditions, not from intuition.
• Working with negation. The phrase "this is false" often confuses, and the game makes you unpack it.
