Verify Your Age in Telegram

You open a channel and instead of the usual pictures you see blurred images and a request to confirm your age. It is annoying, but there is a reason: in a number of countries the law requires limiting sensitive content for minors. Verify Your Age is the tool that does that check. 🔞

It is an official Telegram mini app. All it needs to learn is if you are over eighteen or not.

How the check goes

The bot's description promises a private check through a brief face scan on the device itself. According to Telegram, images and data do not leave the phone and do not reach its servers.

The bot only estimates the likelihood that you are under or over eighteen. It stores and shares nothing else. No documents are needed.

1. Open the check. Most often it starts by itself when you try to view sensitive content.
2. Allow camera access. Face ID is not required, only the camera.
3. Take the scan. Follow the on-screen hints: turn your head, look at the camera.
4. Get the result. Usually the check needs to be done only once.

Where to find it in advance

If you do not want to wait for a prompt, look in settings. On mobile it is the chat settings section, on desktop the privacy section, and inside it the sensitive content option.

Without confirmation such material stays hidden or blurred. After the check, access opens within the rules of your country.

Why all this exists

Online child safety laws in different jurisdictions require platforms to check users' ages. Messengers have to choose: collect documents, link payment cards or use face-based estimation.

Face-based estimation needs no passport, and that is its main argument. Data does not go into a company database, and the check takes under a minute.

Points to watch

Estimating age by face is probabilistic. An adult with a youthful face may sometimes be taken for a minor, and results are worse in difficult lighting.

To improve your odds the first time, sit in good light, remove glasses and headwear, and hold the camera at eye level. 💡

Availability

The check does not work everywhere. It is enabled in countries where local rules require age confirmation. In other regions the bot may offer nothing.

There is nothing to earn here and it is not a game: the app does one job and nothing more.

Spotting a fake

Scammers send links to a so-called age check and ask for a passport, a card or an SMS code. The real check requires none of that. 🛡️

Open it only from Telegram settings or from a prompt inside the app itself. Any request to pay for verification means fraud.
