PollBot: polls for your chat

Bot • Polls & Tests

About this App

Where do we go on Friday, which day works for the meetup, should the chat rules change? While members answer in plain text, someone has to count the replies by hand. PollBot does that for you: it creates a simple poll, collects votes and shows the result in the chat 🗳️

A poll in four steps

The bot is simple on purpose. Its description says it creates simple polls that you can share to a group.

  1. Find the bot and press Start.
  2. Add it to a group or channel from its profile menu.
  3. In the group, send /newpoll.
  4. Follow the prompts: enter the question and the answer options.

Guides about this bot mention a limit of ten options. That is enough for choosing a place or a time to meet.

Five commands cover everything

  • /newpoll creates a new poll.
  • /poll repeats the question when the topic has sunk under other messages.
  • /results shows the tally so far.
  • /endpoll closes voting and prints the final result.
  • /help gives a short description of the bot.

It is easy to tell /results and /endpoll apart: the first checks the current picture, the second puts a full stop on it.

Writing a question people answer

A poll is only as good as its question. Be specific: "When do we meet, Saturday or Sunday?" works better than "What do you think about the meetup?".

Options should not overlap and should cover every realistic answer. If in doubt, add something like "I do not mind", otherwise people will vote for a random option 🎯

When Telegram's own polls are enough

Telegram has its own polls: you can make them anonymous or public, allow several answers and switch on quiz mode. If that is what you need, it is already built into the messenger and requires no bot.

A bot makes sense when you like its commands, want to repeat the question and close voting with an explicit command.

Habits for admins

  • One question at a time. Several topics in one poll confuse voters.
  • A deadline. Say in advance when you will close voting.
  • Follow up. After /endpoll, write what was decided and what happens next.
  • Tone. Do not use polls to pressure a minority.

What about data

The bot sees the votes, and the result appears in the chat. Avoid questions with personal data or sensitive topics unless you are sure members are comfortable with that.

If the bot stops responding, check that it is still in the group and has permission to post messages 🔧

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I create a poll with PollBot?▼
Add the bot to a group or channel, send /newpoll and follow the prompts to enter the question and options. The poll then appears in the chat and members can vote. The /results command shows the tally so far.
How do I close voting and see the final result?▼
Use the /endpoll command: it closes the poll and shows the final result. If you only want the current picture without closing, send /results.
How many answer options can I add?▼
Guides to the bot mention a maximum of ten options. That is enough for choosing a time, place or topic. For a more complex question, split it into several short polls.
Why use the bot instead of Telegram's built-in polls?▼
Telegram's own polls can be anonymous, accept multiple answers and work as a quiz. The bot is handy if you like running a poll through commands: repeat the question with /poll and close it with /endpoll. Pick whichever is easier for your group.
