bacakubot: Photo to Text OCR

You photographed a book page, a sign abroad or a screenshot of a contract, and you need the text copied. Retyping by hand takes ages and invites mistakes. bacakubot does it for you. 📷

The bot recognizes text in an image (the technology is called OCR, optical character recognition) and can translate the result into other languages.

Send a picture, get the words

Using it is easy. Open the chat with the bot and send a photo. In reply you get the text that was on the picture. Select it, copy it and paste it into a note, a document or a message.

Where the name comes from

The name bacakubot comes from the Indonesian word baca, meaning to read. The bot reads for you, which fits well.

When recognition works best

Quality depends on the source photo more than on the bot. A few habits improve the result noticeably. ✨

1. Shoot in good light, with no glare or shadows.
2. Hold the camera level above the page so lines do not slope.
3. Move close enough for sharp letters, but do not crop the edges of the text.
4. Send the photo at full size instead of a heavily compressed copy from another messenger.
5. Printed text is recognized more reliably than handwriting, especially messy handwriting.

What to do with the finished text

A recognized snippet has plenty of uses. Students move textbook quotes into their notes. People who handle paperwork pull numbers and details from photos. Travelers read unfamiliar signs. 🧳

Keep this in mind

Every OCR makes mistakes. Similar characters such as zero and the letter O, or one and a lowercase L, are easy to mix up. Always compare numbers, sums and addresses with the original before typing them anywhere. 🔍

Do not send passports, bank cards or documents with sensitive data through the bot. Any picture you forward to a service leaves your phone, and you do not control how it is stored.
