About this App
Landed in another country and your phone's roaming costs a coffee per megabyte? SimCat helps you pick and connect a travel eSIM so mobile internet works the moment you step off the plane. 📶
You can choose a package two ways: open the mini app or find the plan right in the chat with the bot.
What a travel eSIM is and why bother
An eSIM is a digital SIM built into your phone. You do not insert anything: you get a profile and install it in settings, while your main number stays in place.
For a traveler that is handy. You can buy a data package for the right country at home and simply switch it on at the destination. No physical SIM at the airport and no store hunting.
How the mini app is laid out
The SimCat web version has four sections: home, catalog, your eSIMs and profile. Everything you need sits in plain view, with no long menus.
- Catalog: travel plans to choose from.
- My eSIMs: purchased profiles gathered in one place.
- Profile: your details and account settings.
- Assistant: a support chat inside the app.
The assistant warns that it cannot see your orders and that the conversation is passed to SimCat support. So if you need help with a purchase, give the order details yourself.
Buying and connecting
- Check that your phone supports eSIM and is not carrier-locked.
- Open the bot and launch the mini app, or pick a package in the chat.
- Choose the country and data volume for the length of your trip.
- Pay for the order and install the profile following the instructions.
- Switch the profile on at your destination and allow data on it.
What to check before buying
Phone compatibility matters more than price. Not every model supports eSIM, and some devices from other regions reject it.
Confirm that the package covers the country you need and look at its validity period. It usually counts from either the purchase date or the first network connection, and you should find out which in advance.
Pitfalls nobody mentions
A travel eSIM generally gives mobile data only. There will be no calls or texts to your regular number through it, so use messengers. Keep your main SIM switched on for bank confirmation codes.
Turn off data on the main SIM, or the phone may drift into expensive roaming. Before you leave, save the profile's installation details: without internet you cannot reinstall it.
Before departure, check once more that the phone has free space and charge: installation takes a few minutes and needs a stable connection.
Payment safety
Pay only inside the app or bot and keep the order confirmation. Do not send card details in private messages to people who claim to be support. 🔐
If the installation code or QR does not arrive, check your eSIMs section and then contact support. The project also keeps a development blog with ideas and updates. 🙂
