You are reading a developer chat, someone drops a repository name, and you want a quick look at the code. Opening a browser, searching, scrolling and hitting the download button takes a while. GitHub Bot moves that trip into Telegram. 💻
The bot names two main abilities: find a repository through inline mode and clone a project, sending it as a ZIP archive. The other commands support those two.
Repository search without leaving the chat
Inline mode works like this: in any conversation you start a message with the bot's name and type a query. You do not have to add the bot to a group or channel. A list of matching projects appears above the keyboard, and you pick the right one.
That helps in discussions: instead of a long link, a project card goes into the chat for colleagues to see at once. 🔎
A ZIP archive in one tap
The second function is cloning a repository and sending it as an archive. You receive a file you can unpack on a computer, forward to a friend or save to the cloud.
Telegram limits the size of files that bots can send. Small projects arrive without trouble, while large repositories with history and binary files may not fit.
Bot commands
- /start checks that the bot is online.
- /explore opens the repository browsing mode.
- /clonebranches turns branch mode on and off.
- /cancel stops the current operation if you change your mind or the bot hangs.
Branch mode and why it exists
A repository almost always has several branches. The main one holds stable code, and the others are reserved for new features and fixes. With branch mode on, you can choose exactly which branch to pack into the archive.
It helps when you need not the main version but, say, an experimental branch with the fix you want. 🌿
Step by step
- Open a chat with the bot and press START to confirm it replies.
- Find a project through an inline query or with /explore.
- If you need a version other than the main one, switch on branch mode with /clonebranches.
- Wait for the archive and save it.
If a request hangs or you picked the wrong project, press /cancel and start again. Type the name the way the author writes it, not as someone retold it.
Who will use it
- Students and beginners who study other people's code and want a project in a single file.
- Developers on the move with only a phone at hand.
- Chat members who share finds and want to present a project nicely.
Before you run someone else's code
Downloading a repository is easy. Running it safely is harder. Before you install anything, read the readme, check the license and look through the setup scripts.
Do not run code from unfamiliar pages on your work machine without checking it. Questionable projects are better opened in a virtual environment. ⚠️
A license decides if you can use code commercially and if you must credit the author. A project with no license is protected by copyright by default.
The audience is small, but the job is clear. The developers' contact is in the profile, and you can write there about bugs and wishes.
