Anonymous Bot: Telegram's quiet mail carrier

Bot • Anonymous Chat

About this App

Picture a mailbox where thousands of strangers drop notes, and every so often someone pulls one out at random and pins it to a public board. No signature, no return address. That is how Anonymous Bot worked, one of the early and charmingly simple experiments on Telegram 🤫

Today the bot is asleep. Its profile says it used to send messages to a channel and is now resting. Even so, tens of thousands of people still open it every month.

The note lottery

The idea felt like a game. You wrote the bot a message, and it went into a shared pile. Once enough people had joined, the bot picked one message at random and posted it to a dedicated channel.

  • No names: readers of the channel never saw who wrote a note.
  • Pure chance: nobody knew whether their message would be the one picked.
  • A little patience: if there were not enough people, the bot asked you to wait or bring a friend 🙂

The result was a living feed of confessions, jokes, questions and stray thoughts from all over the world.

Why it went quiet

The creators did not delete the bot. They put it into sleep mode. It still exists, but nothing new reaches the channel. The only command left in its menu, /shutup, simply asks it to stop talking.

Many early Telegram projects ended up this way. Authors move on, servers cost money, or an open feed becomes hard to keep clean without moderation. The profile stays, and in theory someone could wake it up again.

The appeal of unsigned words

Anonymous messages hook people because they feel honest. Without a name attached, people write things they would never say out loud, and reading them can be surprisingly moving 💌 The same format lives on in anonymous chats, confession boxes and question channels.

The downside is just as clear. Without moderation, such feeds fill up with spam and rudeness, which is why most similar projects add filters or shut down.

Anonymous to whom?

With any anonymous bot, remember one rule: you are anonymous to other readers, not to the bot owner.

  1. The bot sees your account. Every Telegram bot receives your user ID, name and username when you message it.
  2. Messages live on a server. You cannot wipe them from there yourself.
  3. Skip personal details. An address, phone number or workplace gives you away even without a signature.
  4. Think before sending. A screenshot of a random note can travel far beyond one channel.

If Anonymous Bot ever wakes up, these rules will apply to it as much as to any other anonymous messaging service ✉️

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Anonymous Bot still work?▼
No. Its profile says it is sleeping, and new messages are no longer posted to the channel. The bot has not been deleted, so its creators could restart it one day.
How did it work when it was active?▼
You sent it a message, and it added yours to a pool with everyone else's. Then it picked one at random and posted it to a public channel with no author name. If too few people were taking part, you had to wait.
Could the bot owner see who wrote a message?▼
Yes. Every Telegram bot sees the user ID and name of whoever writes to it. The anonymity only applied to channel readers. So never send anything that could come back to hurt you.
What does the /shutup command do?▼
It is the only command in the bot menu, and it asks the bot to stop messaging you. In sleep mode it has little use, but it is left over from the active days.
