About this App
You are setting up your own bot or alerts and someone asks for the "numeric chat ID". The Telegram interface does not show it. GetIDs Bot solves it in seconds: you send a message and it replies with what Telegram knows about it. 🔍
The bot's author keeps it short: "I'll tell you everything I know about a message you send me."
Why IDs matter at all
Every user, group and channel in Telegram has a numeric identifier. A name can change, an ID stays. That is why software links to the ID.
- Setting up your own bot. To post in a given chat, a bot needs that chat's ID.
- System alerts. Monitoring tools and services send messages by ID.
- Admin rights. A bot often needs to know who is allowed in.
- Troubleshooting. When a message behaves oddly, IDs help find the cause.
Getting the data in three steps
- Open the bot and tap Start.
- Send any message, or forward someone else's.
- Copy the number you need from the reply.
The /about command shows a short note about the bot. /start launches it again.
Your ID, someone else's and a group's
Your own ID is the easiest: message the bot anything. For another person, forward one of their messages to the bot. If the person hides forwarding, the bot sees less data, which is normal.
For groups and channels, forwarding is the most reliable way: forward a message from the target group or channel to the bot in private. 📨
Reading the numbers
In the Bot API, supergroup and channel IDs start with -100. If the bot shows 123456789, programs usually need -100123456789. This is a common reason for "chat not found" errors when a developer forgets the prefix.
Private chats use a positive number. Ordinary groups have a negative ID, but without the -100 prefix.
Privacy: what to keep in mind
Any message you send to a third-party bot ends up with its owner. Do not forward conversations containing passwords, payment details or private photos. For an ID, any harmless sample will do. ⚠️
- Use a neutral message. For example, your own "test".
- Do not leave the bot in closed work chats. Get the ID, remove it.
- Do not publish other people's IDs. They are not dangerous alone, but extra data about people helps nobody.
A typical newcomer scenario: you created a bot through Telegram's official bot creator, got a token and want the bot to message you. For that you need the token and your personal ID.
An ID bot gives it in a second and your code does the rest. Check the number twice, since one extra digit sends messages to the wrong place. ✅
Alternatives without a third-party bot
If you have your own bot, you can get a chat ID through its API: send a message and look at the chat.id field in the reply to the updates request. That keeps data under your control. 🛠️
In Telegram's web version the numeric part of the identifier is often visible in the address bar when you open the chat.
