Skamoed: Scam Check Bot

Bot • Handy Tools

About this App

A stranger offers a great deal, a seller asks for prepayment, a "manager" messages you about a job. At moments like these you want to check the person fast. Skamoed does exactly that: by its own words, you can check a profile for fraud or "feed" it a scammer. 🛡

Below: how such a bot works, what to expect from it and how to vet people so you do not rely on a single database.

What Skamoed does

The bot introduces itself plainly: "Hi, I'm Skamoed!" It offers two actions: check a person's profile and report a fraudster. The project calls its database the largest base of scammers, fraudulent channels and bots, though that claim is hard to verify from outside.

The menu has no commands, and everything happens through messages in the bot itself. Send a profile for checking and wait for the reply.

How scammer databases work

Services like this collect user complaints and show the result when you check an account. It is crowdsourcing: the more people report, the fuller the base.

The approach has strengths and weaknesses. 🔍

  • Strength. If a person has already cheated others, a complaint may warn you in advance.
  • Weakness. A new scammer is not in the base yet, and a clean check guarantees nothing.
  • Risk of errors. Complaints can be false, made out of revenge or misunderstanding.

A clean check is not safety

This is the main thing to remember. Scammers change accounts often, and a fresh profile will not be found. So no record is not a recommendation. ⚠️

If you checked a person and the base shows nothing, keep being careful, especially when money is involved.

How to vet people yourself

  1. Look at the account creation date and history: a new profile with a polished story is suspicious.
  2. Ask for a video call or confirmation on another network.
  3. Find reviews of the person or shop outside their own channels.
  4. Do not prepay strangers when the deal has no guarantees.
  5. Use a marketplace's protected deal instead of personal transfers.

Signs of fraud

Some signals repeat most often: a price that is too good, pressure like "decide now", a request to follow a link or read out a code from a message, payment to a personal card. Spot two or more and stop. 🚩

Never read out verification codes and never install programs at a stranger's request.

Report wisely

When you "feed" the bot a scammer, write only what you can prove: chat screenshots, receipts. Baseless accusations can hurt an innocent person and, in some cases, you. If you were cheated, also contact your bank and law enforcement, because a bot will not return your money. 📣

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Skamoed bot do?▼
By its description, it lets you check a person's profile for fraud or report a scammer. The project says it holds a large base of scammers, fraudulent channels and bots. The menu has no commands, and you talk to it through messages.
If a person is not in the base, are they honest?▼
No. New scammers are not in the base yet, and they often change accounts. No record is no guarantee. Check the account age, reviews outside their channels and use a marketplace's protected deal.
Will the bot return my money if I was cheated?▼
No. The bot helps warn others and collects complaints, but it does not recover funds. Contact your bank, save the chat and receipts and file a report with law enforcement.
Can I report someone without evidence?▼
It is better not to. A baseless complaint can harm an innocent person and may even bring liability for defamation. Attach chat screenshots, receipts and other proof, and write only facts.
