RemoveHyperlinkBot: A Link-Free Chat

Bot • Moderation & Anti-Spam

About this App

A new member joins your group, and a minute later there is a link to a shady website in the chat. An hour later there are ten of them, and the moderator is asleep. RemoveHyperlinkBot handles this bluntly and reliably: it deletes messages with links from everyone except admins. 🧹

There is nothing to configure. You add the bot, give it the right to delete messages, and it starts working.

What exactly gets deleted

The bot watches messages in the group and removes the ones that contain a website address. It cannot tell a useful link from an advertising one, so any message with a web address goes.

The check covers photo captions and poll questions too. Updates taught the bot to catch addresses in edited messages, so editing a post after sending no longer slips past the filter.

Admin messages stay in place. You can still share links in your own chat, while everyone else has to use plain text.

Two minutes to set it up

  1. Add the bot to your group as a regular member.
  2. Open the administrator list and promote the bot.
  3. Keep the permission to delete messages, and switch off the rest.
  4. Ask a friend who is not an admin to post any website address and confirm the message disappears.

Without the delete permission the bot can do nothing, even though it sits in the group. That is the most common reason for "it does not work". 🔧

Where it fits and where it does not

The bot feels best in chats where links are rarely needed: interest groups, neighborhood chats, support groups, study cohorts. A link from a stranger there is most likely an ad or a phishing attempt.

In work chats where people constantly share documents and articles, the bot would be in the way. Members will complain that their messages vanish, and you will have to explain why.

What it cannot do

  • Old messages: links posted before the bot joined stay in the chat. Remove them by hand.
  • Allow list: you cannot permit links to selected sites only, the rule is the same for everybody.
  • Punishment: the bot deletes the message but does not ban the author. You block the spammer yourself.
  • Disguised addresses: an address written with spaces or inside an image may get through, so add other protection.

If you need finer moderation, look for a filter bot with allow lists and configurable penalties. For simple cleaning, this one is enough.

Building a stronger shield around the group

One bot rarely closes every gap. Spammers usually come to a new chat with a ready mailing, and a link is only one of their tools.

Turn on slow mode in the group settings and limit new members from sending media. Enable join request approval if the chat is closed, and appoint two or three live moderators who can react fast. 🛡️

If spam comes from accounts imitating admins, warn the members: a real admin never asks for a code from a message or a money transfer in private chat.

How to check that it works

If the bot does not delete links, check three things: it is an admin, the delete permission is on, and the author of the message is not a group admin. The bot always skips admins, and that is easy to mistake for a fault.

Another trap: testing from your main account. You are the administrator, so your links stay. Use a second account for the test.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does RemoveHyperlinkBot do?▼
It deletes messages containing a website address from a group when the sender is not an administrator. It checks messages, photo captions, poll questions and edited messages. Admin messages are left alone.
Which permissions does the bot need?▼
Make the bot a group administrator with the right to delete messages. The other rights are not needed and are better switched off. Without the delete right the bot stays in the group but removes nothing.
Will it delete old links in the chat?▼
No, it reacts only to new messages after it joins. Anything posted earlier must be deleted by hand. That is why it is best to add the bot right when you create the group.
Why does the bot not delete my link?▼
Most likely you are a group administrator, and the bot skips admin messages. To test, send a link from a second account. If it is still not removed, check that the bot has the right to delete messages.
